How Gen Z chooses fintech in India
India adds millions of first-time investors, first-time credit users and first-time insurance buyers every year, and most of them are under 26. They choose the app a friend uses, the one a creator explained, or the one that set up a stall at their college during placement season. The decision is made once and rarely revisited, which is why the first-account moment is worth so much.
The audience is also sceptical. They have seen the scam reels and the fine print. Fintech brands earn trust by being explained clearly, in the audience’s language, by a face they recognise, and by being physically present where they are. That is the core of Gen Z marketing for fintech: explanation plus presence.
The channels that work for fintech
- Campus acquisition: signup and KYC counters in commerce, management and engineering colleges, timed to placement and internship seasons, with ambassadors following up. See campus marketing and app user acquisition.
- Creator explainers: finance creators with student and first-jobber audiences, in Hinglish, Tamil, Telugu and Marathi, working from compliance-reviewed briefs. See influencer marketing.
- Community: WhatsApp groups that walk new users from install to first transaction and keep them learning, built by our community marketing team.
- Performance media: creator content as the creative, optimised to completed KYC and first transaction.
- Research: focus groups and onboarding tests with students to find where the funnel breaks before scaling spend.
What to measure
Signups, KYC completion rate, first transaction rate, D30 retention and cost per activated user, by channel and by city. A campus cohort and a paid cohort behave differently at KYC, and the difference tells you where to put next month’s budget. Referral installs from community members are tracked separately because they usually activate best of all.
Attribution is set up with your MMP before launch, with a tracked link or code per college, creator and community. Compliance review sits inside the content process rather than after it, so creators are never asked to pull a post. Monthly reporting shows the funnel from signup to first transaction by channel, which is the view your growth and risk teams both need.
The kind of fintech work the team has done
The team has run campus and creator programmes for TradingLeagues and for a range of investing, payments and credit brands that wanted first accounts from students and first-jobbers. The work typically starts with a campus acquisition pilot in a city with dense commerce and engineering colleges, such as Pune or Hyderabad, paired with a small creator wave, and scales on activation data.
The lesson that repeats: users who had the product explained face to face complete KYC at a far higher rate, and a creator explaining a SIP in Hinglish moves more students than a national brand film.
