Dehradun’s Gen Z: small city, big campuses
Dehradun has around 100 colleges and institutes and somewhere above 100,000 students, which is a lot for a city of roughly 800,000 people. The reason is a handful of very large private universities: UPES at Bidholi, Graphic Era at Clement Town, DIT at Mussoorie Diversion, Uttaranchal and SGRR, each with thousands of hostellers from Delhi, UP, Bihar, Punjab and the North East. Doon University, DAV, MKP and the Forest Research Institute add the state’s own students.
The city’s Gen Z is outdoorsy by circumstance. Rishikesh is an hour away for rafting and cafes, Mussoorie is 90 minutes for a weekend, and the Himalayan treks start from here. Fitness, adventure, travel, bikes and camera gear are bigger categories here per head than in any metro we work in.
Where the Doon valley’s 18 to 26 year olds are
Three belts. Bidholi and Prem Nagar in the north west are UPES territory, a campus town of hostels, PGs and cafes that did not exist fifteen years ago. Clement Town in the south is Graphic Era’s, with Uttaranchal University and SGRR nearby. The city centre, Rajpur Road, Paltan Bazaar, the Clock Tower and Pacific Mall, is where everyone meets, and where Doon University, DAV, MKP and the coaching institutes for NDA, CDS and the state services sit. The IT Park on Sahastradhara Road holds the small but growing first-jobber crowd.
Dehradun also has a defence culture, with the Indian Military Academy, the Forest Research Institute and the Survey of India in the city, which shapes a disciplined, fitness-led Gen Z that is different from a metro audience.
What we run in Dehradun
- Hostel and campus activations at UPES, Graphic Era, DIT, Uttaranchal, SGRR and Doon University. See campus marketing and sampling and activations.
- Fest partnerships at Uurja, Youthopia and the Graphic Era fest, with Thomso and Cognizance at IIT Roorkee for a Uttarakhand-wide push.
- Outdoor creators: trekking, riding, fitness and travel creators who shoot in Mussoorie, Rishikesh and on the Rajpur Road ride-outs. See creator and UGC and influencer marketing.
- Communities around hostel blocks, riding clubs and defence-exam batches. See community marketing.
- Brand strategy for outdoor, adventure and mobility brands that want a Gen Z launch market with the right landscape. See brand strategy.
The Doon year starts in late July, when the hostels fill, and the best weather for outdoor activations runs from September to November and again from February to April. Fest season sits in February and March, and the valley empties in June.
Why brands pick us for Dehradun
Dehradun is five hours from our Delhi office by road, and we run it with a resident lead who knows which UPES and Graphic Era offices clear a stall and which hostel wardens need to be met first. The team behind GenZ Marketing has run Doon campus programmes for KTM, Pulsar and Hive Hostels, and the riding and adventure angle makes the city one of our best two-wheeler markets per student.
Dehradun is usually the fifth North India city after Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida and Chandigarh, and the two hill-state cities pair well. If you are briefing a Gen Z marketing agency for an outdoor or mobility launch, our Gen Z marketing guide is the place to begin.
