Guwahati’s Gen Z and the region it represents
Guwahati has roughly 100 colleges and somewhere above 100,000 students, but its real audience is the North East: eight states with a combined population of around 45 million, a median age younger than India’s, and one city that everyone passes through. Students from Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal, Mizoram and Tripura study at Gauhati University, Cotton, Don Bosco and Royal Global, and the IIT at North Guwahati pulls from the whole country.
North East Gen Z is distinct. English and Assamese are the working languages, Hindi is a third language for many, K-pop and Korean drama fandom is mainstream rather than niche, and football, music and fashion run deeper than in most of the rest of India. Two-wheelers are a necessity, not a lifestyle choice.
Where Guwahati’s 18 to 26 year olds are
Pan Bazaar is the old student heart: Cotton University, Handique Girls’ College, B. Borooah and the bookshops, with Dighalipukhuri and the Uzan Bazaar riverfront as the hangouts. Gauhati University is at Jalukbari in the west, with its own campus town. IIT Guwahati is across the Brahmaputra at Amingaon, a self-contained world whose Alcheringa and Techniche are the biggest student events in the North East. Royal Global and Down Town are on the Betkuchi and Panikhaiti edges; Don Bosco is at Azara. GS Road from Christian Basti to Six Mile is where everyone eats, shops and shoots, and Zoo Road and Beltola hold the PGs.
Bihu season in April and the NorthEast United home games at Sarusajai are the two moments when the whole city’s youth turns out, and both are better activation windows than any mall.
What we run in Guwahati
- Campus activations at Cotton, Gauhati University, AEC, Don Bosco, Royal Global and Down Town. See campus marketing.
- Fest partnerships at Alcheringa, Techniche, Cotton University Week, the GU Youth Festival and AEC Fest.
- Assamese and English creators for music, fashion, football, food and K-culture content. See influencer marketing and creator and UGC.
- North East communities: WhatsApp and Discord groups that reach students from all eight states through their Guwahati campuses and hostels. See community marketing.
- Sampling and activations on GS Road, at Pan Bazaar and on match days at Sarusajai. See sampling and activations.
Guwahati’s year is shaped by Bihu in mid-April, Alcheringa in late January or February, and the monsoon from June to September, when outdoor activations are harder. Colleges reopen in July and August, which is the best window for hostel sampling.
Why brands pick us for Guwahati
Most national plans stop at Kolkata. Ours goes to Guwahati with a resident lead and a creator pool that is Assamese-first, and the team behind GenZ Marketing has run North East programmes for Motorola, OPPO and vivo, for whom the region is one of the strongest mobile markets in the country. Our 200+ city network covers Shillong, Dibrugarh, Imphal and Agartala from a Guwahati base, so one brief reaches the whole region.
Guwahati sits at the end of an eastern chain that starts in Kolkata and passes through Bhubaneswar, with Delhi as the national base. If you are choosing a Gen Z marketing agency that actually goes to the North East, read our Gen Z marketing guide, then brief us for Guwahati.
